Frequently Asked Questions

What are your fees?

The fee for a 50-minute psychotherapy session (CPT code 90837) is $200 per session.

As an out-of-network provider, payment is due at the time of service. Many insurance plans reimburse behavioral health services at up to 80% of the allowed amount once your out-of-network deductible has been met. We can help you verify your benefits so you know what to expect before starting.

Any portion of fees not reimbursed by insurance may qualify as a tax-deductible medical expense, depending on your individual tax situation. Potomac Behavioral Health provides detailed receipts and documentation to help you track expenses for reimbursement and tax purposes.

Do you take insurance?

Like many therapy practices in the DC metro area, Potomac Behavioral Health is an out-of-network provider and does not bill insurance directly.

This structure allows us to offer a level of discretion, flexibility, and individualized care that many professionals in the DC metro area prioritize. Insurance companies often require a mental health diagnosis, limit session frequency, and may request access to portions of your clinical record. By remaining out-of-network, therapy stays focused on your goals, not external requirements.

This model also supports deeper, longer-term work when appropriate and allows for the integration of specialized, neuroscience-informed approaches such as the Safe and Sound Protocol, EMDR, and somatic therapy without arbitrary restrictions.

Many PPO plans reimburse 60–80% of out-of-network behavioral health services after the deductible is met. We provide real-time benefits verification and can assist with claims submission to streamline reimbursement.

Potomac Behavioral Health is designed for individuals who value thoughtful, high-level clinical care delivered with autonomy and privacy.

Where are you located?

Potomac Behavioral Health is located in Chevy Chase, providing telehealth throughout Virginia & Maryland.

You can complete your session on your phone, computer, or tablet from any private, comfortable space.

How can I check my out-of-network benefits?

Potomac Behavioral Health can provide an instant out-of-network benefits check, or you can call your insurance company directly using the following script:

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for behavioral health?
  • What is my percentage reimbursement after my deductible is met?
  • How much is left on my deductible?
  • If I see a therapist in 20815 for $200 per session with session code 90837-GT (telehealth), what will I get back for each session?
  • Do you mail a check to me for the reimbursement?
  • How do I submit a Superbill?

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice will be assessed a $50 fee.

Cancellations with less than 2 hour’s notice will be charged the full session fee.

If there’s an emergency, please reach out as soon as possible and let your therapist know. Three cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice is an indication that you might not be ready for therapy, so we should have a conversation about that.

Attending a therapy session under the influence of drugs or alcohol will result in cancellation of the session, which will be charged at the full rate.

Attending twice under the influence of drugs or alcohol will result in discharge, as telehealth is not the appropriate modality. Referrals to more appropriate treatment providers will be given.

Do you have in-person sessions?
No, all of our sessions are offered virtually.
How long are sessions?

Sessions last 50 minutes.

What are your hours?
We’re available Monday through Friday, 9 am to 6 pm. The last session of the day starts at 5 pm.
What is a “Good Faith Estimate”?

By law, healthcare providers must give patients who either don’t have or don’t use insurance an estimate of the bill for the cost of medical items and services for the calendar year.

Your clinician will give you a Good Faith Estimate in writing before you begin care at Potomac Behavioral Health.

If you receive a bill that is $400 or more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 985-3059.

Do you take kids?

Potomac Behavioral Health serves mature teens and adolescents who can communicate effectively via telehealth and focus for periods of 50 minutes.

Telehealth may not be the best option for young children.

How do I know what type of treatment is right for me?

You don’t. Therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. You’ll try elements of different modalities and figure out the best fit.

You don’t have to choose any one type of treatment before beginning therapy.

Can you really do EMDR and somatic therapy virtually?

Yes, EMDR and Somatic Therapy can be done virtually.

Numerous studies have confirmed that EMDR and Somatic Therapy administered remotely can be just as effective as in-person sessions.

Is your dog a therapy dog?

Nolan Ryan Carraco is a very good dog. Don’t believe anything else you hear.
