Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?

Potomac Behavioral Health is located in Chevy Chase, providing telehealth throughout Virginia & Maryland.

You can complete your session on your phone, computer, or tablet from any private, comfortable space.

Do you have in-person sessions?
No, all of our sessions are offered virtually.
How long are sessions?
Sessions last 45 minutes.
What are your hours?
We’re available Monday through Friday, 9 am to 6 pm. The last session of the day starts at 5 pm.
What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice will be assessed a $25 fee.

Cancellations with less than an hour’s notice will be charged the full session fee.

If there’s an emergency, please reach out as soon as possible and let your therapist know. Three cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice is an indication that you might not be ready for therapy, so we should have a conversation about that.

Attending a therapy session under the influence of drugs or alcohol will result in cancellation of the session, which will be charged at the full rate.

Attending twice under the influence of drugs or alcohol will result in discharge, as telehealth is not the appropriate modality. Referrals to more appropriate treatment providers will be given.

Do you take insurance?

Like most therapy providers in the DC metro area, Potomac Behavioral Health is an out-of-network provider, so we do not take insurance directly.

Payment is collected at the time of service, and then you are provided with an insurance-friendly receipt called a Superbill, which you can send to your insurance company to easily get your reimbursement check. We can also connect you with online resources to help with quick and easy insurance filing to keep therapy affordable and accessible.

How much will I get back?
Most insurance companies provide 60-80% reimbursement for “behavioral health” (typical procedure code is 90834), but check with your insurance company to be sure.
How can I check my out-of-network benefits?
When you call your insurance company, please ask the following questions:

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for behavioral health?
  • What is my percentage reimbursement after my deductible is met?
  • How much is left on my deductible?
  • If I see a therapist in 20815 for $200 per session with session code 90834-GT (telehealth), what will I get back for each session?
  • Do you mail a check to me for the reimbursement?
  • How do I submit a Superbill?

What is a “Good Faith Estimate”?

By law, healthcare providers must give patients who either don’t have or don’t use insurance an estimate of the bill for the cost of medical items and services for the calendar year.

Your clinician will give you a Good Faith Estimate in writing before you begin care at Potomac Behavioral Health.

If you receive a bill that is $400 or more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 985-3059.

Do you take kids?

Potomac Behavioral Health serves mature teens and adolescents who can communicate effectively via telehealth and focus for periods of 45 minutes.

Telehealth may not be the best option for young children.

How do I know what type of treatment is right for me?

You don’t. Therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. You’ll try elements of different modalities and figure out the best fit.

You don’t have to choose any one type of treatment before beginning therapy.

Can you really do EMDR virtually?

Yes, EMDR can be done virtually. Telehealth has come a long way in the past few years, and online EMDR is an effective treatment of various mental health disorders and trauma-related conditions.

Numerous studies have confirmed that EMDR administered remotely can be just as effective as in-person EMDR.

Is your dog a therapy dog?

If snuggling counts as therapy, then yes.
