Individual Therapy

I’m so glad you’re here!

Individual therapy sessions are convenient, 45-minute telehealth sessions that can be conducted from your home, office, or favorite rocking chair – anywhere you feel comfortable and have privacy.

Potomac Behavioral Health uses a collaborative approach, so you’ll be integral to your treatment plan. We’ll use a holistic approach, remembering that mental health is part of overall health, including your physical and spiritual health.

Through therapy, you’ll gain emotional resiliency, and a deeper understanding and compassion for yourself will nourish you for the rest of your life.

Let’s get you grounded and stable.

We’ll do it through evidence-based therapies like Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and person-centered therapy.

To help you find your center, we’ll also use techniques like deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or polyvagal exercises.

Let’s create a plan with goals that support your health and pave the way for a brighter future.

  • Identify WHY you’re struggling with certain emotions or concerns.
  • Explore how your thoughts and behaviors are negatively affecting your well-being, keeping you feeling stuck, or preventing you from moving through a problem.
  • Learn and practice new coping skills.
  • Set and maintain boundaries without the guilt of saying “no.”

Here’s Sharon’s* therapy story…

Sharon was struggling on all fronts.

She had panic attacks at work, constantly endured hurtful comments from her mom and sister, and she was overwhelmed at home taking care of her young children.

Through therapy, Sharon learned that there are only three options for handling problems:

(1) Tolerate the problem.
(2) Work to change the problem, or
(3) Change your beliefs and attitudes about the problem.

Sharon never had good role models for healthy problem-solving, and she was paralyzed with indecisiveness, so she defaulted to the invisible fourth option:

DO NOTHING. STAY MISERABLE.

In therapy, Sharon learned the coping and communication skills needed to pursue each of the three REAL options.

She started deciding which option was the most effective for any given situation.

At first, it all felt theoretical, but as she practiced, she found herself becoming more thoughtful, more self-aware, and more present. This positive feedback loop bolstered her confidence.

The light bulb had gone off.

She came to therapy one day and said, “I’m so proud of how I handled this!”<

She likened her new skills from therapy to doing pushups at the gym. The more she exercised her brain, the stronger it got. Now, there was no stopping her!
